Hi Grahame,

I'm dying to know more about this board, where you got it from, price,  description etc.  I'm sure lots of people would like to know more.

Can you tell us all more about it, it's bound to be of great interest to one and all !

Welcome to the forum Grahame, and thanks in anticipation!

Afternoon, Desmo - I wasn't sure how many big jig fanatics are out there, so just floated my big board set-up to see what level of interest there might be. The board was made for me by Terry McGee in Wetherby in Yorkshire. He already makes and sells 1000 and 1500 piece boards, but I challenged him to meet my spec for a bigger set-up, and he delivered!! We started sketching it back in Nov '08 but only settled on the spec in March '09. The board is in three panels - all 2ft x 4ft in 12mm MDF (light green); the parts are interlocking with lateral tenon joints and locking blocks, locked by Allen key. It is a really neat piece of kit. It even has a spider base with central bearing so that the board can revolve - stops you having to walk around it all the time. The board is thus flexible/scaleable - use it in one, two or three panel format - at its max, it's a 6ft x 4ft unit. It can take up to a max of 5000 piece or 6000 pieces, depending on the jig manufacturer - for instance, it takes up to 5000 in the Clementoni range or 6000 in the Educa range. But obviously it takes everything up to these sizes in any manufacturer range.
We're working on a storage solution at present - using the 'laptop bag' as the model (Denise (Mrs) McGee's idea) so that each panel is protected in a sleeve for storage. It really needs such a solution so that it can be stored safely and without using up space. The whole set-up is meant to last; it's an investment. The price is one for Terry to say and may depend on level of interest - economies of production, methinks - for me, it should outlast me, and hopefully I've got quite some years to go, so the cost over 'xx' years and 'xxx' jigs is peanuts.
I hope that gives you an idea - I've floated with Margaret (my personal jig shopper) at the Club that I'd do an article for the Newsletter at some point, maybe with some pictures of the board being used 'in anger'.
I don't know if you can post photos on the Bulletin Board, but I'm more than happy to e-mail photos to folk, if they're interested. Hope this helps!

This sounds a brilliant idea.  I'm ill and have been doing jigsaws quite frequently for the last few years and am wanting to progress onto larger jigsaws.  I've been wondering what to do them on cos its important I can use a board which can slant down onto my lap, while I sit with my feet up.  I can't do large jigsaws at a table - it strains my back leaning forwards so much.

I got someone to get a large piece of hardboard for me - big enough to just fit 5000 pieces but the problem is - it's quite bendy.  I am going to put a piece of felt on it to stop the pieces slipping, I can then roll up the jigsaw when wanting to put into storage. I'm wondering whether I need a different type of board.

By now, I'm sure the original poster has his solution. I use a drafting table (40" x 30") that's tiltable and has a ledge that can be raised/lowered.  The largest puzzle I've done is 2,000 and it barely fit.  Have yet to locate any stores in (Winnipeg) Canada that sell anything larger than 1,500 pcs.  That fellow in Yorkshire could probably patent and sell his pattern abroad.  With the Baby Boomers creating a peak of seniors, it sounds like a growth industry.
